Why I love watercolor

As a watercolor artist, I find myself continuously drawn to this beautiful and versatile medium. There's something about the way the pigments react to water and paper that makes each piece feel alive and unique.

One of the reasons why I love watercolor is its unpredictability. Unlike other mediums, watercolor has a mind of its own. The way the paint blends and spreads across the paper is always different and it's this happy accident that I find so exciting. There's always an element of surprise when working with watercolor, which keeps the creative process fresh and exciting.

Another aspect of watercolor that I adore is its translucency. The way the paint allows light to shine through the layers creates a luminosity and depth that is difficult to achieve with other mediums. This quality is particularly well-suited for capturing the subtle nuances of nature, such as the delicate petals of a cactus flower or the nuances of a person’s skin tone.

Watercolor is also incredibly versatile. It can be used to create a wide range of effects, from soft washes and gradients to bold, expressive strokes. It can be used in a controlled and precise manner or allowed to flow and blend freely. This versatility allows me to experiment with different techniques and styles, constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible with watercolor.

Finally, there's something about the physical act of painting with watercolor that I find deeply meditative and soothing. The way the brush glides across the paper, the sound of the water, the way the colors blend and flow – it all comes together to create a deeply immersive and enjoyable experience.

Watercolor is a medium that continues to inspire and challenge me as an artist. Its unique properties and versatility make it an incredibly rewarding medium to work with. Whether I'm capturing the beauty of nature or the human figure or exploring more abstract concepts, watercolor allows me to express myself in a way that feels both personal and universal.
