Negative Shapes in Watercolor

Online Art Instruction with Andrea Merican

In this workshop, we will be exploring painting negative shapes with watercolor.

You will learn how to paint the space around objects rather than the objects themselves.

The concept of negative shapes can be difficult to grasp at first, but you will see as your painting progresses, the simplicity and beauty of this painting skill.

We will work on 2 or 3 small paintings since each one requires drying time in between layers. Or, since you have the advantage to stop and start your class any time you wish, you can simply hit pause while your painting dries.

We will be using wet into wet painting techniques with a little table salt for added texture.

You can draw an image similar to mine, or come up with something entirely on your own. Choosing a simple shape will produce the best results.

All skill levels welcome!
