Our volunteer highlight this month is Andrea Merican Art!
Andrea is one of our stellar volunteers. She donates her time and talent in many ways. She has taught multiple workshops and her guidance has made her a favorite instructor. Andrea shows up to support at events and is always willing to lend a hand. She has also donated a portion of her art sales to The Walter Hive through an annual fundraiser. Andrea is a renowned artist who works in a wide range of mediums and we are honored to have her on our team.

What do you enjoy most about volunteering at The Walter Hive?
- Volunteering at The Walter Hive is a wonderful opportunity to use my creative arts skills to connect with others. I love teaching art concepts and techniques and hearing the feedback from the students. Also, the entire Walter Hive staff is amazing to work with and always makes everyone feel so welcome and included.
Is there a favorite memory you'd like to share from one of our workshops/events?
- One of my favorite memories was from a Monday night online teaching class. I was sharing some watercolor painting techniques and one of the students asked a question on a tip or trick to do something easier. I was able to come up with a solution for him right away and he was so appreciative. Being able to help someone learn a new skill or improve a process fills me with joy! It is really an honor to be able to share what I’ve learned doing art my whole life with someone who might be new in their creative journey.
What's your favorite trip you've taken to date?
- I was incredibly fortunate enough to take an amazing 2 week art trip to Spain in 2019. We stayed in this beautiful villa on a hill top in Andalusia. Every day we got to draw and paint and take trips to other villages and towns. The staff cooked amazing food for us each night and I made so many new artist friends too. I fell in love with Spain and its landscape, culture and people. After the art workshop, my husband flew to Madrid and we explored for a few days there and then Barcelona. The art and architecture was amazing! From there we traveled through the South of France and had such a special time together. I love Europe so much and can’t wait to explore even more countries in the future.
